Description

So, now that all entries are in and being judged and stuff I think it's time to post this up. This is my entry for the Anime Boston 2013 Artist Alley table contest. We were to choose a Japanese demon (yokai) from a list and create it. Winner will get a full table in the alley in 2013.

The yokai I chose here is Samebito, a humaniod shark who, according to myth, committed a petty crime and was banished from the Dragon Lords of Pretentiousness. A human man took pity on Samebito, allowed him to live in his pond, and when the human couldn't buy the woman of his dreams, Sammy shed ruby tears and handed the gems over to the human in thanks for not being an ass to the poor demon.

The human got the girl and Sam got to go back home for his good deed.

This is my second largest piece I've done in clay. I am horrible with a paintbrush so except for the black back of his shark body, this is entirely in clay. The black coloring is pastel dust brushed on before and after baking. His hair and beard are two different colors.

I originally tried to go with white hair but I realized his tusks would get sort of mixed up in that and the black skin of his face would have made him look like some weird drow (dark elf) so went with blue and blue-green. And of course all the little red tear drops. Wished the clay glittered more than it seems to in the picture...

Also caned the eyes. I am between loving caning eyes and not. In the future I will try it with my wobbles and see if they look better or not with actual pupils. Some characters like Alucard have like a fiery iris and while I can swirl colors I think it would look cooler with actual pupils and stuff.

But I digress.

I hope that this contest is done each year for AB from now on because I had a lot of fun doing this and not only is it a chance for a free table but also to see the talent everyone can put into an original piece.

Fingers crossed!

Handmade with polymer clay.
